Adviser’s Minute – May 2023

Today, I would like to share some thoughts with you about being the leader that others need, particularly within the context of the Order of the Arrow.

Leadership in the Order of the Arrow extends far beyond titles and symbols. It is about embodying the values of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service, and making a positive impact on the lives of those around us.

To be the leader that others need, we must lead by example. Our actions should reflect the highest levels of integrity, honesty, and respect. By setting the standard, we inspire others to follow suit, creating a culture of excellence within our lodges and chapters.

Listening plays a vital role in effective leadership. We must lend our ears to the voices of our fellow Arrowmen, seeking to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations. In doing so, we foster an inclusive and supportive environment where every member feels valued and heard.

As leaders, we have the power to encourage and support those around us. Let us recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our fellow Arrowmen, offering words of encouragement during challenging times. Together, we can create a brotherhood that uplifts and empowers one another.

Central to our purpose is the spirit of cheerful service. We are called to serve our fellow Scouts, our communities, and the principles we hold dear. Let us embrace this spirit wholeheartedly, going above and beyond in our service. By doing so, we inspire others to do the same, perpetuating the legacy of the Order.

Leadership within the Order of the Arrow is a continuous journey of personal growth. Let us seize opportunities to learn and develop our leadership skills, embracing challenges as opportunities for self-improvement. Through our commitment to growth, we foster a culture of continuous learning and development within our Order.

Above all, leadership in the Order of the Arrow requires humility and selflessness. By putting the needs of others above our own, we demonstrate a profound dedication to the principles of our brotherhood. Together, we can build a stronger, more united Order that leaves a lasting impact.

In conclusion, as members of the Order of the Arrow, we have been entrusted with a responsibility to lead and serve. Let us strive to be the leaders that others need, embodying the values of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. By leading by example, listening attentively, supporting and encouraging one another, and continuously growing as leaders, we pave the way for a brighter future.

Yours in Brotherhood,
