The CVC Experience

Serving as a Conclave Vice Chief (CVC) is one of the best leadership positions the Order of the Arrow has to offer. As a CVC, you get the opportunity to work with Arrowmen from outside your lodge to plan and execute a specific part of the annual conclave program to ensure an enjoyable experience for hundreds of Arrowmen. Additionally, serving as a CVC challenges you and makes you a better leader while exposing you to new ideas, resources, and a deeper understanding of the OA outside the lodge.

Still not convinced? Check out these personal statements from Arrowmen who have served our section as a CVC as they reflect on their time as a CVC and how it impacted their time in Scouting and the OA.

It was good and beneficial because it was a new type of leadership opportunity.

Serving as a CVC was a pivotal moment in my Scouting career. It allowed me to build friendships outside my lodge, gain a deeper understanding of how our organization works, and allowed me to discover new interests and put the leadership skills I learned in my unit to the test. My time as a CVC peaked my interest in leadership roles outside my chapter and lodge and ultimately set me on the path to later serving as section chief and later as the communications team adviser for the section.

Being a CVC allowed me to create the conclave program I wanted. My vision was able to come alive.

I loved being a CVC because it helped me see scouting as a whole more. I was no longer doing something just for my lodge or chapter but for others across our area. I also met so many great friends many of which I’m still in contact today. Being a CVC allowed me to get my foot in the door to seeing how much more there was to Scouting. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything.
Jordan Jefferis
2016 Host Lodge CVC, 2018 Western Region Chief
Being a CVC is an experience that provides excellent leadership learning opportunities. You get to work with a team to sculpt an event that will have a lasting impact on hundreds of Arrowmen. I enjoyed being a CVC for two years and, after that, I was elected to a section position, which many previous CVCs do. If you are looking to elevate your leadership abilities and serve local lodges and Arrowmen, this opportunity is for you.
Ethan Jones
2017-2018 Merchandising CVC
Becoming a CVC for our section conclave was one of the best decisions of my life and while that probably sounds hyperbolic, hear me out. It’s such an amazing opportunity to either delve deeper into an area of Scouting you love or to try something completely new that you never thought you’d enjoy. Not only does it allow you to develop your leadership skills and bring your ideas to life but you get to do so in a safe environment where CVC’s and advisers are instantly drawn together as friends and family in a united vision of bringing conclave to life. It’s positions like this that often unknowingly prepare us for the path ahead and create a foundation in our lives that we never forget. Don’t worry about whether you’re “skilled enough” or whether you think you’re a leader or not, if you have an interest in the position and a willingness to serve your fellow Arrowmen then you have everything you need to take the next step!

2014 Training CVC, 2016 National Vice Chief
I highly recommend serving as a Conclave Vice Chief and/or section officer. I had the opportunity to work with a fantastic group of dedicated Scouts and Scouters who were utterly devoted to both making conclave an unforgettable experience for Arrowmen and our section one of the finest in the west. Working with that team helped me to develop planning, organizational, and interpersonal skills that served me incredibly well in college and beyond. More importantly, I look back fondly on all the friendships I developed and the fun we had together in the service of Scouting.
